The Beacon Ridge Stairway Improvement Project came about
as a result of neighborhood crime prevention work beginning in 2004.
In June of 2006 we were awarded a $15,000 ÒSmall and
SimpleÓ neighborhood planning grant from the Department of Neighborhoods
(DON). As a first stage, we have contracted Barker
Landscape Architects to assist us in the development of a conceptual plan.

Origins
The poorly lit, overgrown and un-maintained stairways
were identified by the community as a place where drug, alcohol and
prostitution activities occurred.
Generally, the stairs were avoided by neighbors. Many calls were made to
Seattle City Light, SDOT and Seattle Police for improvements to the safety of
the stairs, with varying degrees of success.
In 2006, the Mayor included additional money in the city
budget, specifically for stairway maintenance and repair. BRIC was fortunate to
find out about the additional money and through our Neighborhood District
Coordinator, we succeeded in having SDOT start with our stairways, on Walker,
Hill and Holgate Streets. That
structural repair work and drainage improvement is nearly done.
The next phase is for us to plan how to make these
public spaces an asset to the neighborhood.
Below are links to the stairs Òas-isÓ. There is also a
2-foot contour map of the location of the stairs.
